Play Therapy Mornington Peninsula
What happens in a play therapy session?
Your child is welcomed into the playroom, containing a wide range of intentionally selected toys and creative materials, which will be set up in the same way each session. They will be able to choose how they want to play for the duration of the session, while the therapist follows their lead, demonstrating unconditional positive regard, deep empathy and congruency. This gives your child the freedom to express feelings and experiences in ways that feel safe and natural.
Do I stay in the room during sessions?
Sessions are held one-on-one between therapist and your child to help build trust and develop a therapeutic relationship. You are encouraged to wait outside the room and be present and available for your child at the end of their 45-minute session. If your child is experiencing some hesitation about entering the room on their own, we will collaborate to develop an individualised plan to support their level of comfort.
How do I support my child after each session?
It is natural to want to know how your child’s session went straight after and ask them questions. We want to assist your child to feel a sense of safety and privacy surrounding their therapy sessions. Therefore, it is best to avoid asking detailed questions and follow your child’s lead, respecting how much or little they choose to share. If there is something you are wanting to discuss in greater detail with the therapist, please make a separate time, without your child present.
Will I get updates?
Yes. You’ll be offered regular updates and reviews to discuss your child’s progress and share therapeutic skills and strategies.
How long will therapy last?
Each child is different. Some children may only need a short series of sessions, while others benefit from longer term support. We’ll review this together as we go.
